Among others, the activities you can do include bird watching, hiking through natural trails, or hiking through dormant volcanoes. Getting to the Braulio Carrillo National Park takes less than one hour from San Jose. The vegetation becomes denser and greener, the clouds rest over the canopy, the temperature decreases and the rain is falling. Deep into the forest, life flourishes everywhere. An infinite number of mammals live in the large territory of the Braulio Carrillo National Park, including 5 of the 6 felines that exist in Costa Rica, like the Jaguar (Panthera onca), the Puma (Puma concolor) and the Manigordo (Leopardus pardalis). In the heart of the rain forest, we find the La Selva Biological Station, a private reserve managed by an international consortium and named by UNESCO as the Biosphere Reserve. Braulio Carrillo National Park covers over 44.000 Ha., thus being one of the biggest protected areas in Costa Rica. The National Park is a real living laboratory in the virgin rain forest and cloud forest, there are more than 6.000 plants, 400 species of birds and hundreds of wildlife species.
Braulio Carrillo National Park hosts over 400 species of birds, like the Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), the Sombrilla bird (Cephalopterus glabricollis), the Fishing Eagle (Pandion haliaetus) and the Yigüirro (Turdus Grayi), which is the national bird in Costa Rica. Braulio Carrillo is a natural sanctuary and a paradise for bird watching lovers.
In Braulio Carrillo National Park, you will be able to see the Barba dormant Volcano. Going up the Barba, you will be able to see the changes of vegetation due to the altitudinal differences towards the peak, which is 2906 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by rain forest. You can also contemplate the Barba and the Danta Lagoons, dormant craters that have been filled with rain-water, 4.5 meters per year, that falls over this fertile land.
